Oswald Boateng, the British born Ghanian designer was inspired by the immaculate suits his father wore, he received his first suit from his mother at eight: a double breasted purple mohair suite.
Boateng started designing clothes with his mothers old sewing machine and was selling to his friends. Boateng helped his friend to make clothes for a fashion show, and after receiving praise for his work, he sold his first collection to a menswear shop in Covent Garden. Some of his first designs were sold in Academ, Newburgh Street in 1987.

Boateng’s contemporary approach to menswear design helped to forge a new appreciation for Savile Row, and draw in a younger demographic.[7] Boateng’s moved fully into Savile Row in 2002. He has designed costumes for movies like : Hannibal, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Tomorrow Never Dies, Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, Eastern Promises, Gangster Number One, Alfie, Assault on Precinct 13, The Matrix, Miami Vice, Oceans 13, and Rush Hour 3.
