Angélique Kidjo just put another piece of African music history on Hollywood Boulevard.
The five-time Grammy winner has become the first Black African to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, earning the 2,854th star in recognition of her remarkable global career.

But Kidjo used the moment to spotlight something bigger than herself.
During her speech, the Beninese music icon reminded the world of Africa’s enormous contribution to global music, saying: “Without us there’s no music possible [on] this planet.”

The celebration brought together friends and major names including Willem Dafoe, Harvey Mason Jr., Djimon Hounsou and Adekunle Gold, who gathered to honour a career that has carried African music to audiences around the world.
For Kidjo, the star is personal. But the history it represents belongs to Africa too.
