Afrobeats sensation Asake is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at his rise to fame with a newly announced documentary, voiced by award-winning British actor Idris Elba. After making waves with back-to-back chart-topping hits and sold-out shows, the singer is now set to share the story of his journey from the streets of Lagos to international stardom.
On September 23, 2024, Asake dropped the trailer for the documentary on Instagram, teasing an inspiring story that begins in the gritty inner-city neighborhoods where he grew up. The film provides an up-close look at Asake’s relentless pursuit of his dreams, with Elba’s powerful narration adding extra depth to the story.
This documentary arrives hot on the heels of Asake’s third album, Lungu Boy, which boasts features from the likes of Wizkid, Stormzy, Central Cee, and Ludmilla. The title itself, Lungu Boy, is a nod to Asake’s roots, with “lungu” meaning “ghetto,” symbolizing his journey from humble beginnings to global fame.
Asake’s incredible success has been particularly felt in the UK. Following his second sold-out show at the O2 Arena, the artist was awarded both an O2 Arena sold-out plaque and a BRIT silver certification for his album Work of Art, handed to him by Idris Elba himself. This marks Asake’s second BRIT plaque after his debut album, Mr Money With The Vibes, also earned silver status in the UK.
With all three of his albums topping the UK Apple Music Album Chart, Asake has made history as the only Nigerian artist to achieve this remarkable feat. Now, with the release of this documentary, fans can witness firsthand the grit, determination, and talent that catapulted him from Lagos to the global stage.
