‘BBNaija’ star Doyin Challenges Unwanted Style Policing on Social Media

The reality TV personality took to her Twitter account on November 15, 2020, to express her frustration with individuals who feel entitled to pass judgment on others’ clothing choices. She emphasized that merely watching someone on TV doesn’t grant the right to dictate their attire.

In her tweet, she questioned the validity of opinions about what someone should or shouldn’t wear, challenging individuals to consider their position in the person’s life before offering unsolicited advice. She bluntly stated that those who believe they have the right to control others’ fashion choices based on TV appearances are, in her opinion, irrational.

The advent of social media has facilitated a closer connection between celebrities and their fans, but it has also provided a platform for the easy expression of negative opinions, often anonymously. Female Nigerian celebrities, such as singer Ayra Starr, have borne the brunt of this trend, facing critiques, particularly about their clothing styles.

Ayra Starr and her love for miniskirts

Ayra Starr, for instance, has confronted criticism regarding her choice of mini skirts, responding firmly to critics by asserting that they hold no authoritative roles in her life. Another notable instance involves Gen Z personality and Big Brother Naija All Stars winner, Ilebaye, who faced backlash for her fashion choices at Davido’s party on November 8, 2023. Despite the social media uproar, Ilebaye chose not to engage with the critics.
