Chikodinaka Perpetua Chima Wins Special Recognition at the Green October Event for “Threads of Heritage”

Some collections speak through fabric — Threads of Heritage roars through history.

At the 2021 Green October Event by La Mode Magazine, rising designer Chikodinaka Perpetua Chima took home a Special Recognition Award for her graduating collection — a project that blurred the line between fashion and cultural anthropology. The win wasn’t just a nod to creativity; it was a standing ovation for African storytelling stitched in color, texture, and meaning.

Unveiled in 2020 as Chima’s graduation project from Nkumba University’s Fashion and Textiles Design program, Threads of Heritage set out to do what most collections don’t dare: merge two distinct cultural fabrics into one cohesive identity. She paired the Kikoy of East Africa — all fluid stripes and coastal rhythm — with the Aso Oke of the Yoruba, a textile woven with prestige and metallic gleam. Together, they formed a tapestry that felt at once ancient and avant-garde.

The result? A wearable conversation between heritage and modernity.

On the Green October stage, her designs told stories of movement, migration, and roots. The judges applauded her for protecting her artistic integrity, her meticulous tailoring, and her statement that African fashion is both global and grounded.

In the years since, Chima’s journey has been a steady ascent. She has made other collections such as Desert Bloom (2020), Fragments of Light (2021), and Cul Horizons (2022) have only deepened her reputation as a designer who doesn’t chase trends — she curates meaning.

Threads of Heritage endures because it’s more than fashion. It’s a philosophy that shows that Africa’s identity is not divided by borders but connected through artistry. She made dialogue by weaving Kikoy and Aso Oke.
