Nigerian athletics star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has etched his name into the history books after becoming the first Nigerian to win a gold medal in the men’s shot put at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Competing at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, the 33-year-old produced a championship-winning throw of 21.07 metres on Thursday to secure the historic victory, ending years of near misses and adding another milestone to his decorated career.
The triumph marks a significant upgrade from the silver medal he won at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, while also erasing the disappointment of narrowly missing the podium with a fourth-place finish at Birmingham 2022.
Enekwechi sealed victory in dramatic fashion by overtaking defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand. Walsh had taken an early lead with an opening throw of 21.03 metres, but the Nigerian responded with his best effort in the penultimate round, a throw the New Zealander could not surpass.
The contest remained fiercely competitive until the end, with England’s Scott Lincoln claiming the bronze medal after recording a throw of 20.99 metres. Just four centimetres separated Enekwechi from Walsh in one of the closest field event finishes of the Games.
The victory further cements Enekwechi’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished field athletes. Over the past decade, he has established himself as a dominant force in African athletics, holding the African shot put record and winning five continental titles for Nigeria.
His latest success also strengthens Team Nigeria’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, taking the country’s medal haul to 15 medals.
So far, Nigeria has collected eight gold medals, five silver medals, and two bronze medals, with Enekwechi’s historic achievement providing another major highlight for the nation’s athletics team in Glasgow.
