Ebuka Obi-Uchendu Goes Regal in Gold D29 Africa Babariga

Ebuka

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has done the monochrome thing, given us denim Agbada, and now he is bringing out the gold.

For his latest fashion moment, the Big Brother Naija host stepped away from his usual black-and-white tailoring and embraced a rich golden Babariga that feels every bit as luxurious as the colour suggests.

Ebuka kept the caption simple: “Zinariya,” the Hausa word for “Gold.” And honestly, the outfit needed very little explanation after that.

Designed by D29 Africa, the look is built around a striking metallic golden fabric that immediately catches the light. Rather than overwhelming the traditional silhouette, the colour gives the outfit a polished, contemporary finish while still allowing its Northern Nigerian roots to take centre stage.

The Babariga is a grand three-piece traditional ensemble commonly worn across Northern Nigeria, consisting of a flowing outer robe, an inner tunic and matching trousers. Ebuka’s interpretation keeps those classic elements intact but adds a sharper fashion-forward structure.

The standout detail is the geometric tile embroidery running across the chest panel and neckline. The pattern breaks up the expanse of gold without taking away from the richness of the fabric, creating a nice balance between ornamentation and restraint.

And then there is the matching cap, which completes the look and gives the entire outfit a beautifully cohesive finish.

There is something particularly satisfying about seeing Ebuka move between completely different sides of Nigerian menswear. One Sunday, he was giving us a denim take on the Agbada, complete with a matching cap. Now, he has switched the denim for metallic gold and taken us straight into Northern Nigerian grandeur.

The silhouette may be traditional, but the styling feels very much like Ebuka: polished, intentional and just dramatic enough.

If this is what “Zinariya” looks like, we completely understand the caption.
