The brilliantly outspoken eponymous label was founded by Makioba Suzan Bob-Manuel Olugbile, a fashion visionary with a unique approach to her craft that has endeared her to fans and followers all over the world. Fueled by her passion for fashion, Makioba has transformed what was once a simple idea into a power house favourite among the media, celebrities and fashion lovers, particularly in plus size fashion industry. The Makioba brand was birthed to the world of fashion in the year 2013 after a decision to move to Lagos State Nigeria, from the waterside city of Port Harcourt to start a new career in fashion. Three years down the line, what started as a side job with a tailoring studio she set up in her guest room has evolved into a fast growing business that now employs close to 20 workers and caters to the fashion needs of stylish women both locally and internationally.
The brand started its journey as a leading plus size fashion brand in Africa when Makioba decided to start modelling her pieces, in doing so the label was identified as a fashion forward brand that caters to women of every size. Gradually plus size women like herself started taking notes of her stylish and trendy looks thus creating a huge following and since the niche market was struggling with finding fashionable option to suit its needs, Makioba became (and still is) the go-to brand for curvy women. DESIGNER’S PROFILE
Sitting at the helm of creative affairs, Makioba cites her Kalabari culture with every design by creatively combining its influences with fashion inspirations from local and international designers like Lanre Da Silva, Deola Sagoe, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, Dolce & Gabana and a few others to create an aesthetic that is unique to the brands core. The brands style fuses pattern, print, exquisite elements and traditional artistry to produce day wear, evening wear, gowns and cocktail dresses that bridge time and make the label successful within and outside the shores Nigeria. The perfect Makioba woman is the personification of sophistication, femininity, brilliance, confidence and on top of it al,l the ability to look trendy and stylish no matter her size or age.
Makioba is breaking style barriers one look at a time, from reinventing styles for all sizes to constructing trends and silhouettes to suite whatever figure, she continues to unabashedly shape the boundaries of fashion with unapologetic confidence. Makioba holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the prestigious University of Port Harcourt and has worked for mega companies like; RED Transport, Casella Nigeria Limited and Dresser Kellog Energy Service. Now a full time fashion designer, she continues to explore the beauty in the unexpected and convey the luxury that exists in a world free from stereotypes.
