Nigerian-American actress Folake Olowofoyeku has been honoured with two traditional chieftaincy titles in her hometown of Imo, Ilesa, Osun State, marking a significant cultural milestone in her life and career.
Best known internationally for portraying Abishola in the hit CBS sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola, the actress shared videos from the colourful traditional ceremony on her Instagram and TikTok pages, giving fans a glimpse into the special occasion. Although the exact date of the coronation was not disclosed, the ceremony was revealed publicly on July 28, 2026.
Olowofoyeku was installed as Yeye Oba and Yeye Atayese, titles that recognise both leadership and service within the community. While she described the titles as “King’s Female Chief” and “Peacemaker,” they are also commonly interpreted as “Mother of the King” and “Mother Who Reforms the World.”
For the ceremony, the actress was dressed in elegant white traditional attire adorned with coral beads and elaborate gold regalia. The installation included several customary rites, among them the placement of sacred chieftaincy leaves into her crown and a traditional gun salute, symbolising her new status within the community.
The honour also carries deep personal significance. Both of Olowofoyeku’s late parents held chieftaincy titles, making her installation a continuation of a longstanding family tradition.
Born on October 26, 1983, in Lagos, Folake Olowofoyeku is the youngest of 20 children of lawyer and politician Babatunji Olowofoyeku and his wife, Felicia. She attended Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City before completing her secondary education at Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls in Lagos.
At the age of 18, she relocated to the United States to pursue higher education, eventually earning a degree in theatre from the City College of New York.
Before achieving international recognition, Olowofoyeku built her acting résumé with appearances in productions including 30 Rock, Modern Family, Transparent, and Death Race 2050. Her career reached new heights in 2019 when she landed the lead role of Abishola in Bob Hearts Abishola, the CBS comedy co-created by Chuck Lorre, Eddie Gorodetsky, Al Higgins, and Gina Yashere.
Her performance earned widespread acclaim and a 2021 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, with the show enjoying a successful five-season run.
