Halle Bailey did not just arrive at The Little Mermaid premiere. She arrived looking like she had stepped straight out of the ocean.
For the world premiere of Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid, the actress and singer chose a custom Valdrin Sahiti gown that paid beautiful tribute to the character that brought her to the centre of one of Disney’s biggest films.
The strapless teal gown was all about movement, shine and shape. Its fitted bodice featured soft draping and silver wave-like details that travelled down the fabric, creating the illusion of rippling water. From there, the dress opened into a dramatic mermaid skirt before sweeping into a long, fluid train.
The colour was arguably the biggest statement. That rich teal shade, combined with the metallic finish, immediately called Ariel to mind without turning the look into a literal costume. It was recognisable enough to connect with The Little Mermaid, but glamorous enough to stand firmly on its own as a red carpet gown.
Bailey kept the rest of the styling deliberately restrained. Her hair was pulled into a sleek high ponytail with a braided detail framing the front, while glowing skin, soft brown eyeshadow and a nude lip kept the beauty look polished and understated. Statement drop earrings featuring teal stones brought a little more colour to the face, while a diamond ring and deep blue manicure completed the look.
The restraint was important because the gown already had plenty to say. The metallic details, dramatic train and mermaid silhouette created the spectacle, allowing Bailey to avoid overloading the look with accessories. Even the beauty choices worked with the dress rather than competing with it.
More importantly, this was theme dressing done properly. Instead of simply wearing something blue because she was playing Ariel, Bailey built an entire visual connection between the character and the clothes. The colour referenced the ocean, the silhouette echoed a mermaid’s shape, and the shimmering details suggested movement beneath the water.
It felt intentional without feeling forced. That is what makes the look so memorable. The dress works as a beautiful gown first, but the Ariel references make it even more meaningful when you know the occasion.
Halle Bailey understood the assignment and then some.
