The announcement marks a significant milestone not only within the Harvard Law community, but also for the global Nigerian diaspora. Sharing the news, Ifeanyi described the moment as both humbling and energizing, expressing gratitude to her peers while signaling a readiness to lead.

Her path to this position reflects a strong foundation in both academic excellence and public service. Prior to Harvard, Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna was named a Gates Cambridge Scholarship recipient, completing an MPhil in Criminology at the University of Cambridge. Her research focused on international criminal justice systems, an area shaped in part by her earlier experience as a Congressional aide to Stephen Lynch.

During her undergraduate years at American University, where she graduated summa cum laude in Political Science, she founded ZeEntry, a nonprofit initiative aimed at bridging the technology gap for justice-involved individuals. The work reflects a consistent throughline in her career: expanding access and advocating for systemic change.

She also comes from a family deeply rooted in legal excellence. Her mother, Dehlia Umunna, is a Clinical Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and the Faculty Director of its Criminal Justice Institute as well as the first Nigerian professor at the institution.

Adding to her recent achievements, Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna was awarded the Chayes Fellowship, which will support her Summer 2026 internship with the UK’s Public Defender Service. The opportunity extends her work into an international context, reinforcing her focus on global legal advocacy.

As she steps into her role as Co-President, balancing leadership with her Juris Doctor studies, her trajectory points toward a career defined by impact, service, and a broader vision for justice.
