Renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has provided a fascinating backstory to his upcoming Netflix series, “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre.”
In a recent Instagram post, Afolayan revealed that the project had its origins nine years ago under the working title “ODU.” The initial concept envisioned an epic saga set in the historical context of the Oyo Empire, drawing inspiration from the narrative complexity seen in Game of Thrones.
During a brainstorming session at Afolayan’s residence, creatives and scholars, including writer Tunde Babalola and Professor Tunji Azeez, contributed to shaping the idea.
Reflecting on the journey, Afolayan emphasized the importance of patience and the extended gestation period for the project. He expressed gratitude for the eventual extraordinary outcome and acknowledged that the wait was an integral part of the creative process.
The series, “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre,” serves as a continuation of the original “Anikulapo” film and is set to premiere on Netflix on March 1, 2024. The star-studded cast includes Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Adebayo Salami, Gabriel Afolayan, Adedimeji Lateef, and others.
