Since 1992, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been annually observed on 3 December around the world. The theme for this year’s IDPD is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. This theme focuses on the empowering persons with disabilities for the inclusive, equitable and sustainable development envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This year’s theme “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality” is what La Mode Magazine Disability Foundation is known for, the foundation focuses on creating awareness, appreciate and support persons living with disabilities. For over four years, the foundation has affected positively to the lives of persons living with disabilities. It is an advocacy awareness foundation, where persons with disability are given a voice. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons living with Disabilities emphasizes the right to life, equality, and non-discrimination of persons living with disabilities. The Foundation advocates the need for the Nigeria Government to pass the Disability Bill and for individuals and communities to show love and support persons with disabilities without discrimination. The foundation has created awareness on the different types of disabilities from Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy , amputees challenges and general disability and still creating awareness. The foundation also helps provide job opportunities, skills acquisition and training for persons living with disabilities.
