Among the many celebrities that killed it at last night’s Met Gala, actress Lupita Nyong’o truly stuck out as nailing the theme of “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Her dress, designed by Versace, was avant garde at its finest, combining a star-pattern pink dress with rainbow-colored wing-like shoulders, as well as a matching purse. The look was bold, daring, colorful and, most importantly, incredibly campy. Lupita’s makeup game was also on fleek, complimenting the outfit perfectly. What really stood out, however, was Lupita’s hair, largely because of the hidden meaning behind it.

The hairstyle fit the look perfectly, of course, but the deep meaning behind it made it even more special. In a picture of Lupita posted to Instagram, Vernon explained why they chose to go for an afro with picks. He wrote, “I drew so many inspirations from our heritage in particular a self portrait by @laurendkelley “Pickin” as well as #MarieAntoinette and considering the portions of #lupitanyongo dress and of course the theme.”
