Michael B. Jordan made history at the 98th Academy Awards, winning his first Best Actor Oscar for his dual portrayal of twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. The win marked a groundbreaking moment, as he became the first actor to earn the award for playing twins, while the film itself earned four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler and a historic Best Cinematography win for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the first woman ever to take home the honor. Ludwig Göransson also added to the film’s haul with Best Original Score.

Jordan’s acceptance speech was heartfelt and reflective. He began with gratitude, acknowledging his mother in the stalls and his father, who traveled from Ghana for the ceremony. Turning to Coogler, he said, “I’m so honoured to call you a collaborator and a friend… You gave me the opportunity and space for me to be seen. I love you too, bro.” He also paid tribute to the legacy of Black actors like Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, and Halle Berry, before thanking fans for their unwavering support: “I know you guys want me to do well, and I want to do that because you guys bet on me. So thank you for keeping on betting on me.”

While Sinners shone brightly, Paul Thomas Anderson’s political thriller One Battle After Another led the night with six awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for Hamnet, Amy Madigan took home Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, and Sean Penn earned Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, though he was not in attendance.
