Big Brother Naija star Phyna has shared her thoughts on beauty queen Chidinma Adetshina’s participation in the upcoming Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, sparking a heated debate online.

On August 14, 2024, Phyna took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her concerns about Chidinma’s decision to compete, despite her support for the beauty queen. Phyna’s worry, however, lies with the impact this could have on other Nigerian contestants who have been preparing for the pageant.

“Just thinking out loud oh. I’m in support of Chidinma O, but this one she now wants to rep us like this….What will now happen to our own typical Nigerian Queens that have been preparing for it too, Omo i for Advise her to leave pageant first or for this year… then go next tym,” Phyna tweeted.

Her comments quickly ignited reactions from other X users, with some accusing her of being xenophobic. Phyna, however, was quick to defend her stance, clarifying that her concerns were not rooted in xenophobia but in fairness to other Nigerian contestants.

“No I’m not. Like I said I’m in support of her,” Phyna responded to a comment calling her xenophobic. “But if the slot is gonna affect someone else then No.”

The situation became more complex with other users chiming in. One user pointed out that Chidinma didn’t put herself in this position, saying, “She was invited, never invited herself, get facts right.”

Another user showed support for Chidinma, noting the challenges she has faced: “I like how you’re being polite but she was rejected by another country for being one of ours, this has to be the little we can do to stand with her.”

Chidinma Adetshina’s journey has been tumultuous. She recently withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant following allegations from the South African Home Office accusing her mother of fraud and identity theft. This led to backlash from South Africans when she was announced as a contestant. Following her withdrawal, the Silverbird Group, which organizes the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, extended an invitation to Chidinma, which she accepted.
