Selena Gomez, the singer and actress, recently shared a series of makeup-free images on Instagram, captioned simply “Real.” In the close-up black-and-white photo, Gomez’s freckles were visible on the bridge of her nose as she wore her hair down.
The post received praise from her famous friends, including BFF Nicola Peltz Beckham and Lily Collins, who celebrated her natural beauty. Camila Cabello jokingly exclaimed, “Good god woman have mercy.”
Gomez continued the candid theme on her Instagram Story, sharing a selfie of herself making a funny face in a gray robe.
Beyond her honest posts, Gomez has been open about her struggles with self-esteem. At a SXSW panel titled “Mindfulness Over Perfection: Getting Real On Mental Health,” Gomez discussed how watching her 2022 Apple TV+ documentary, “My Mind & Me,” made her realize the importance of being kinder to herself.
“It makes me sick to hear the things that I was saying about myself in the beginning. It bums me out,” she said at the event, attended by her mom and Wondermind co-founder Mandy Teefey.
Gomez and Teefy founded Wondermind, an online community focusing on mental health, to provide a safe space for people to discuss their struggles. The company was launched in December 2021, stemming from their desire to support mental health awareness.
