Three beauty ingredients that should never be mixed with each other

Three beauty ingredients that should never be mixed with each other

The drawback of the new fashion of layering more cosmetics, just like Korean women do, could be to mix active ingredients with each other, which in reality should never be combined. One of these is retinol. We at LA’ MODE explain to you which ingredients should never be used.

Mixing the Wrong Ingredients: What Happens?

Mixing the wrong ingredients can make them less effective or inactive. “Understanding the action of the active ingredients you use is the basis for a successful beauty routine, capable of giving visible results.” A strategy to orient yourself is to use multiple products of the same brand. “When products are formulated by the same company, they are created to work together and to deliver better results. If you select products from different brands, however, it is essential to pay attention to the ingredients in the products, to ensure that they work well together and do not end up causing damage to the skin ”. This is why focusing on a slim beauty routine is always the best choice, especially if you use retinol often.

Retinoids are hailed by beauty experts for their ability to renew the skin, but the combination of a retinol-based product with another exfoliating active can damage the skin’s protective barrier. An example? Alpha hydroxy acids, also known by the abbreviations AHA / BHA, or glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid. This combo can cause peeling, especially in those with sensitive skin. If you are using retinol, it would be best to combine it with a super moisturizing ingredient, such as hyaluronic acid. Thus, to avoid unpleasant side effects.

Retinol can also cause problems with some forms of vitamin C, particularly with the less stable ones. It is also important to know that, while vitamin C is an antioxidant, that is, it protects against environmental oxidation, and must be used mainly during the day, retinol, and its derivatives, are skin “renovators”, and can cause some problems of photosensitization with the sun, and for this reason they should only be used at night. So, to get the best results from these two ingredients, experts explain that they should never be used at the same time.

Dermatologists have always tended to point out that most vitamin A products (another way to call retinol) don’t work well with the best anti-acne ingredient: benzoyl peroxide. Together, they can cause skin irritation. In this regard, the scientific literature has shown, through some studies, how benzoyl peroxide is able to make vitamin A ineffective. But not all types, some forms of vitamin A, such as tretinoin, are safe and effective when used with benzoyl peroxide. The important thing is to know how to choose well.
