Tobi Amusan has delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, further cementing her dominance in the women’s 100 m hurdles on the continental stage.
Competing at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, the world record holder powered through the final in 12.83 seconds, securing her third consecutive African title in the event. Her victory adds to previous championship wins in Asaba (2018) and Mauritius (2022), reinforcing her status as one of Africa’s most consistent track and field stars.
Amusan had already set the tone for the final by qualifying fastest through both the heats and semi-finals. In the decisive race, she maintained control from the start, crossing the finish line comfortably ahead of the field despite minor delays caused by technical issues with the timing system.
Speaking after her win, Amusan noted that she was unaware of her official time during the race but emphasized that securing the gold medal was her primary goal.
The podium also featured strong performances from other athletes, with Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller claiming silver in 13.24 seconds, while Nigeria’s Adaobi Tabugbo earned bronze with a time of 13.26 seconds, her first senior international medal.
Team Nigeria continued its strong start to the championships, also securing gold in the Mixed 4x400m relay through a combined effort from Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson, and Patience Okon–George.
