Travel across Africa just became significantly easier. Togo has officially removed visa requirements for all African citizens, allowing passport holders from across the continent to enter the country visa-free for stays of up to 30 days.
Effective 18 May 2026, the West African nation becomes the sixth African country to introduce full visa-free access for African travellers, joining Rwanda, Ghana, Benin, and Kenya in expanding regional mobility under growing continental integration efforts.
The announcement, made by Togo’s Ministry of Security via its official X account, framed the decision as a landmark step toward strengthening African unity and cooperation. According to the statement, the policy reflects Togo’s commitment to positioning itself as a hub for openness, mobility, and economic opportunity within the region.
Officials further noted that the reform aligns with broader African Union objectives under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework, which promotes freer movement of people, goods, and services across member states. The announcement also coincided with the opening of the Biashara Afrika Business Forum in Lomé, held under the theme “Powering Africa’s Economic Transformation through the AfCFTA.”
Beyond the policy shift, the government emphasized its long-term vision of transforming Lomé into a regional centre for trade, culture, and investment, reinforcing its role in West Africa’s evolving economic landscape.
However, travellers are advised that visa-free access does not mean unrestricted entry. Visitors are still required to complete a mandatory travel declaration via Togo’s official platform at voyage.gouv.tg at least 24 hours before arrival. Upon completion, a travel slip must be presented at border checkpoints, whether entering by air, land, or sea.
Standard immigration, health, and security regulations remain in effect, and the 30-day stay limit is strictly enforced.
As more African nations adopt visa liberalisation policies, Togo’s move adds further momentum to the continent’s push toward seamless intra-African travel. For many travellers, Lomé known for its coastal charm and growing cultural and business appeal—may now be significantly easier to access than ever before.
