If there was one moment lighting up timelines this weekend alongside the celebrations of International Women’s Day, it was the podium at Albert Park Circuit. Nigerian-American racing prodigy Ugo Ugochukwu delivered a masterclass performance to secure his first-ever FIA Formula 3 victory, marking a historic moment at the 2026 Melbourne Feature Race.
Driving for Campos Racing, the 18-year-old started the race from second on the grid. The opening moments proved challenging as he briefly slipped to third when the lights went out. But the young driver quickly regained his rhythm, fighting his way back to second by lap two before executing a decisive overtaking move at Turn 9 to take the lead from teammate Théophile Naël.
Once at the front, Ugochukwu controlled the race with remarkable composure. Over the course of the 23-lap contest, he steadily built a commanding seven-second lead, demonstrating both pace and precision. Even a late Safety Car period which saw the race finish under yellow flags could not disrupt his dominance as he crossed the line comfortably to claim the chequered flag and his maiden FIA Formula 3 win.
After the race, the young driver reflected on the milestone:
“The Feature Race done here in Melbourne, managed to come away with a win, so super pleased, my first win in F3. It’s been a perfect start to the season, we have been quick all weekend. P2 off the line, fell back a little at the start but managed to make my way back through to the lead and from there I had a nice gap until the last Safety Car. Super happy and thank you to the whole team.”
The victory builds on an already impressive start to the year. Just weeks earlier, Ugochukwu captured the 2026 title in the Formula Regional Oceania Championship in New Zealand, adding another major achievement to his rapidly growing résumé.
With the Melbourne win, Ugochukwu now leads the FIA Formula 3 Championship Drivers’ standings after Round 1 with 25 points, ahead of Freddie Slater and Bruno del Pino, who both sit on 18 points.
Born in New York City on April 23, 2007, Ugochukwu is the son of Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba and Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi. While he races under the American flag, his Nigerian heritage remains a proud part of his story.
At just 18 years old, Ugo Ugochukwu is already proving that the future of motorsport may well belong to him.
