Some wedding guests come to celebrate. Others arrive with a fashion moment of their own. Veekee James managed both at the traditional wedding of rapper Zlatan Ibile and Davita Omoniyi, stepping out in a richly embellished wine-red gown that made a convincing case for maximalist occasion dressing.
The Nigerian designer chose a fitted mermaid silhouette, but the real interest was in the contrast between the gown’s delicate upper half and its heavily decorated skirt. Her sheer corset bodice featured rows of wine-coloured crystals arranged across nude mesh, creating the illusion of beadwork suspended against the skin.
The detailing was especially striking around the neckline, where closely placed beads formed a high, jewellery-like collar. Across the chest, curved lines introduced a softer shape, while vertical embellishments drew attention to the waist. The sleeves continued the pattern with circular rows of crystals that wrapped around her arms and extended over her hands like fingerless gloves.
Below the waist, the design took on a completely different texture. Waves of sequins, crystals and intricate beadwork moved across the fitted skirt in shades of burgundy, champagne and bronze. The embellishments followed the body’s curves before flowing into a modest train, giving the gown movement without losing its sculpted shape.
Then came the gele.
In metallic champagne, the traditional headwrap rose into an elaborate arrangement of pleats, folds and sculptural curves. Its height gave the entire look a commanding finish, while the warm metallic colour connected beautifully with the gold detailing in the skirt. It was the kind of gele that could have carried an outfit on its own.
Veekee kept the remaining accessories within the same colour story. Deep red drop earrings, a sparkling gold clutch and silver rings complemented the gown, while bronze-toned makeup and a soft nude lip allowed the embellishments to remain the focus.
What makes this look successful is the way it balances several strong elements without allowing them to compete. The transparent bodice introduces lightness, the embellished skirt brings richness, and the gele provides the dramatic finishing touch. Even with so much happening, the consistent wine-and-champagne palette holds everything together.
