If sports had movie scripts, this one would get rejected for being too unrealistic. But Victoria Mboko clearly didn’t get that memo.Thursday morning? She was in a Montreal hospital, getting her wrist cleared after a scary semi-final tumble.
Thursday night? She was standing centre court, trophy in hand, after beating Naomi Osaka—yes, that Naomi Osaka—in the National Bank Open final.
Scoreline: 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Mood: Main character energy. Location: Montreal, but felt like Wakanda.
The match started rough—22 unforced errors in the first set rough. Osaka was cruising, the crowd was nervous, and the commentators were already telling comeback stories from her previous matches. But Vicky wasn’t done. She broke serve eight times in the final two sets, turned the vibe all the way around, and made the court hers.
This wasn’t just a win, it was a history drop: Third Canadian ever to win this tournament.
First Canadian in the Open Era to win it in Montreal.Only the second teenager in history (after Serena Williams in ‘99) to beat four Grand Slam champs in a single event.
And she did it all while wearing a heavy wrist wrap, after taking down Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Osaka in one week.
When Osaka’s last shot hit the net, Mboko dropped her racquet, hit the floor in disbelief, then bolted to her team for hugs that could have powered the CN Tower lights (which, by the way, were lit red and white for her). Even Toronto’s men’s final paused when people watching on their phones started screaming.
She’s now ranked No. 25 in the world—up from 333 at the start of the year—and the highest-ranked Canadian player. Oh, and she banked $752K in one afternoon. Light work.
From ITF titles earlier this year, to French Open third round, to Wimbledon upsets, to this? The girl’s on a Serena-style trajectory and we’re all lucky enough to watch it happen live.
Or in her own words: “I think it just proves that your dreams are closer than they seem.”
