When to brush your teeth: before or after your morning coffee

Morning coffee is a must-have ritual for many people: it helps to cheer up and tune in to a productive work day. However, few people think about when to brush your teeth – before or after you drink coffee – but it really matters. We figure out exactly how the drink affects the health of the oral cavity and why you should not brush your teeth immediately after drinking a cup of coffee.

Natural coffee – regardless of whether you drink it with or without milk – contains a large amount of acids. These acids significantly weaken the protective functions of the enamel, and regular brushing with a toothbrush can severely injure your teeth. Of course, if you break this rule once, nothing bad will happen, but if you regularly brush your teeth right after coffee, it can negatively affect their health.

However, it is necessary to cleanse the oral cavity after drinking coffee: the drink is rich in natural pigments that can cause darkening of the tooth enamel, so they must be washed off as soon as possible. What to do in this situation? Dentists recommend using mouthwash or even plain water – this will help remove coffee residues from the surface of your teeth without causing mechanical damage. On average, it takes about 30 minutes to restore the pH balance of the oral cavity – after this time, you can safely brush your teeth, without fear of damaging the tooth enamel.
