eMiss Universe Nigeria, Chidmma Adetshina, has shed light on her decision to delete her Twitter account amid backlash surrounding her nationality and her win as Miss Universe Nigeria.
In a recent interview on Arise 360, the Nigerian-South African beauty queen opened up about how the negativity on Twitter took a toll on her mental health, prompting her to leave the platform.
“I’m not on Twitter,” Adetshina shared during the interview. “I had to delete it because I felt like it was too much for me. I’m a comment reader, so I read each and every comment… I could spend 80% of my day reading comments. It became toxic for me.”
Adetshina further explained that while she continues to use Instagram, she had to limit her comment section to protect her peace of mind. Although she appreciates the support from her fans, she is also aware of the backlash that some of her supporters face for standing by her.
“Sometimes there are people in the comment section saying, ‘I really like you but I don’t want to put my feelings out there,’ and it’s valid because when people support me, they get dragged,” she noted. “I don’t want people to go through something like that for supporting me.”
Chidmma’s decision to quit Twitter comes after facing intense criticism, particularly following her withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant. Allegations by the South African Home Office about fraud and identity theft involving her mother had sparked controversy during the competition. Additionally, her participation in the Miss South Africa contest initially led to backlash from some South Africans, who questioned her eligibility.
After stepping down from the Miss South Africa pageant, the Silverbird Group, organisers of the Miss Universe Nigeria competition, invited Chidmma to compete, where she later won the crown. However, her victory wasn’t without its challenges, as some critics speculated that she won out of pity.
Despite the hurdles, Chidmma Adetshina continues to embrace her role as Miss Universe Nigeria and is focused on her reign, navigating the complexities of social media with grace and resilience.
