It is safe to say that wigs are definitely the new trend. They have been made more favorable because of the availability of lace closures, frontals, etc. So it is only fair to know how to manage these wigs so that they will last longer and remain as good as new.
The first step to taking care of your wig is to identify if it is made of human hair or synthetic. It is important to verify because there are different types which will require different methods of care. Human hair wigs and synthetic wigs both should be washed at about the same frequency however the way in which you cleanse them will be totally different.
Next, you should consider washing your wig around the tenth time you wear it. Where you go and what you do, including weather conditions and how much you sweat will weigh heavily on how often you clean it.
To wash your wig, brush out the wig before you start washing. Then, make a solution of shampoo and warm water before placing the wig in. Swish the wig around and allow it to soak for up to 15 minutes. Feel free to do this until you are satisfied that it is clean but do not scrub it.
To rinse it, you can either place it under a running tap or dip it into a bowl of clean water consistently until it is free of shampoo. Shake the wig thoroughly to remove excess water and leave-in conditioner is highly recommended. To dry the wig, pat it with a clean towel and place it on a plastic wig stand. Do not comb the wig out when it is too wet in order to avoid tugging and shedding of the hair strands.
Keep the wig far away from heat. So hair equipments like dryers, curling irons and hair straighteners should be used minimally.
If you use the wig daily, place it on a wig stand. Never sleep or take a shower with your wig on. If you rarely use it, you can keep it in a paper box or in a cool storing package.
