In a dazzling showcase of creativity and bold storytelling, celebrated designer David Tlale unveiled his Antics 2022 Collection at the prestigious Tranoï Show. Known for pushing the boundaries of fashion through dramatic silhouettes and rich textures, Tlale once again captivated audiences with a collection that balanced theatrical expression and refined craftsmanship. In this exclusive conversation with La Mode Magazine, he shares the inspiration behind Antics 2022, the vision that shaped it, and the collaborative effort with Bright Urhobo of Ranto Clothings on the standout Look 1 the iconic “Obama Dress” in black brocade.

La Mode Magazine (LMM): David, your Antics 2022 Collection made quite a statement at the Tranoï Show. What was the central inspiration behind it?

David Tlale (DT): Antics was about controlled chaos celebrating individuality while challenging structure. I wanted to explore how fashion can be both rebellious and refined at the same time. The collection plays with bold silhouettes, exaggerated textures, and dramatic storytelling, but always anchored in craftsmanship.

LMM: The collection feels theatrical yet wearable. How did you strike that balance?

DT: That balance is everything. Fashion should excite, but it must also connect. I approached each look like a character in a story distinct, expressive, but still grounded in reality. The key was in the tailoring and fabric choices; even the most dramatic pieces had a sense of discipline in construction.

LMM: Let’s talk about Look 1—the striking “Obama Dress” in black brocade. It immediately captured attention on the runway.

DT: Ah yes, Look 1 set the tone for the entire collection. The “Obama Dress” is powerful, structured, and unapologetically bold. It represents leadership, elegance, and resilience—qualities I associate with the name.

LMM: We understand that this particular look involved a collaboration. Can you tell us more about that?

DT: Absolutely. For the “Obama Dress,” I collaborated with Bright Urhobo of Ranto Clothings. Bright brought a unique perspective to the piece, especially in refining the fabric manipulation and enhancing the richness of the black brocade. His expertise added depth and a certain sharpness to the final look.

LMM: What did Bright Urhobo specifically contribute to the design process?

DT: Bright worked closely with me on the structural detailing. He helped perfect the way the brocade held its form, ensuring the dress maintained its bold silhouette while still allowing movement. His input elevated the craftsmanship it became more than just a garment; it became an experience.

LMM: Would you say this collaboration influenced the rest of the collection?

DT: Definitely. Collaborations bring fresh energy. Working with Bright reminded me of the power of shared creativity. That synergy carried through the collection, encouraging more experimentation and confidence in pushing boundaries.

LMM: The textures and fabrics throughout Antics 2022 are incredibly rich. Was that intentional from the start?

DT: Yes, very intentional. Texture was a storytelling tool in this collection. From brocade to layered textiles, each fabric was chosen to evoke emotion and movement. I wanted people to not just see the collection, but almost feel it.

LMM: What do you hope people take away from Antics 2022?

DT: I hope they feel empowered to embrace their individuality. Fashion is a language, and Antics is about speaking boldly, unapologetically, and authentically.

LMM: Finally, what’s next for you?

DT: More storytelling, more collaborations, and more pushing boundaries. Fashion never stands still and neither do I.
