Black velvet is never a bad idea for the red carpet, but Iyabo Ojo made sure hers came with a little extra drama.

The Nollywood actress stepped onto the pink carpet at the BFI London Film Festival for The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, wearing a strapless black velvet gown that let its silver embellishments do the talking.

The standout detail was the crystal fringe cascading across the bodice in sculptural, wave-like patterns. One side curved gracefully across the front, while the other rose into a sharp, wing-like flourish towards her shoulder. Tiny gold drops at the ends added warmth to the otherwise cool-toned embellishment.

The gown’s sweetheart corset bodice defined the waist, creating a fitted silhouette that flowed into a sleek, floor-length velvet skirt. That contrast between the intricate crystal work and the clean skirt kept the look dramatic without overwhelming it.

Iyabo kept her accessories focused, pairing the gown with long silver drop earrings, a silver watch and understated rings. A small black woven clutch maintained the dark colour palette, while her high ponytail, cascading curls and smoky eye makeup brought the finishing touches.

Against the festival’s vivid pink backdrop, the black-and-silver combination had all the contrast it needed. The velvet delivered richness; the crystals supplied the sparkle.

The verdict? Classic black, but make it a red-carpet moment.

Iyabo’s look is a reminder that a strong eveningwear silhouette doesn’t need a dozen competing details. Sometimes, one well-executed embellishment is enough to command the cameras.
