Nollywood icon Kanayo O Kanayo is making a grand return to his Igbo roots with a starring role in the upcoming film, “Out of Breath,” alongside Chidi Mokeme and Jidekene Achufusi.

The film marks Kanayo O Kanayo’s first major Igbo-speaking role in decades, following his memorable portrayal of Chief Omego in the Igbo classic, “Living in Bondage.” Despite his numerous film credits over the past 30 years, this project holds a special place as a return to his linguistic heritage.

In an Instagram post, Kanayo O Kanayo expressed his pride in returning to his dialect, emphasizing that “English language remains a borrowed tongue.”

“Out of Breath” is an Igbo epic film reportedly based on true events, promising an African narrative rich in tradition and courage. Directed by Obi Emelonye, who marked his 57th birthday with the release of the film’s trailer, the project represents a significant contribution to Igbo cinema.

The star-studded cast includes Jidekene Achufusi, Chidi Mokeme, Queen Nwokoye, Ebele Okaro, Obi Okoli, Chinenye Nnebe, and Echelon Mbadiwe, adding to the anticipation surrounding the film’s release.

While “Out of Breath” does not yet have a confirmed release date, it joins a select group of indigenous epics making waves in mainstream Nollywood. Recent Yoruba epics such as “Aníkúlápó,” “King of Thieves,” “Òrìṣà,” and “Jagun Jagun” have enjoyed both critical and commercial success, with “Beast of Two Worlds” set to premiere in cinemas nationwide on March 29.
