Nana Akua Addo has never treated Fashion Week like a place to play it safe.
At Milan Fashion Week, the Ghanaian style star stepped out in a dramatic Chinasa Martins creation that took familiar preppy references and stretched them into something far more sculptural.
The starting point was classic — a crisp white shirt, plaid tie and tailored skirt. Then came the sleeves. Huge braided structures wrapped around Nana’s shoulders and arms, creating exaggerated volume that made the outfit look closer to a piece of sculpture than traditional tailoring.
The plaid continued through the fitted skirt in bold blue, green and red stripes before extending into thigh-high lace-up boots. It gave the look a strong visual rhythm, while the oversized proportions did most of the talking.
Nana added green sunglasses and statement red flower earrings for extra colour, keeping her cropped hairstyle sleek so nothing competed with the silhouette.
There is something particularly interesting about seeing a Ghanaian designer’s interpretation of familiar fashion codes take centre stage in Milan. Chinasa Martins’ design does not simply borrow from the preppy vocabulary associated with Thom Browne — it pushes those references into a distinctly more theatrical direction.
And Nana, naturally, was the perfect person to wear it.
