The honour was conferred on Friday, October 16, 2026, during the university’s Africa Day celebrations, making it her third honorary doctorate and her first from a British institution.

Dressed in the university’s red doctoral gown, Alakija accepted the recognition with gratitude, thanking God and the institution’s Council and Senate for the honour.

Her acceptance speech focused on Africa’s potential and the responsibility that comes with success. She described the continent as a place of immense creativity and resilience, encouraging young people to pursue their ambitions with determination while remembering the importance of serving others.

The recognition adds another chapter to a career that has crossed several industries.

Before establishing herself in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector through Famfa Oil, Alakija worked in banking and built a successful career in fashion. Her business interests later expanded into real estate and printing, alongside philanthropic initiatives supporting education, women and vulnerable communities.

Her previous honorary doctorates came from Benson Idahosa University in July 2021 and Chrisland University in November 2022.

Following the ceremony, the University of Buckingham hosted a reception in her honour, where she interacted with students, alumni and other members of the university community.

Family members, including her son Dele Alakija and sister Arinola Ogbara, were also present to celebrate the occasion.

For Alakija, the latest recognition reflects a professional journey that began long before her success in oil and gas. From banking and fashion to entrepreneurship and philanthropy, she has built a career across industries while continuing to champion opportunities for others.
