Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer Danny Young has officially joined the Recording Academy’s 2026 New Member Class, marking another milestone for Nigeria’s growing influence within the global music industry.
The invitation places the Afrobeats pioneer among a new group of artists, producers, songwriters, engineers and music executives who will help shape the future of the recording industry while participating in the Grammy Awards voting process.

Reacting to the announcement, Danny Young described the invitation as one of the defining moments of his career.
“I’m honoured and excited to announce that I have joined the Recording Academy’s 2026 New Member Class. After over two decades of creating, producing and contributing to the growth of Afrobeats, this is a meaningful milestone in my journey. I’m grateful for the opportunity to bring my experience and voice to the global music community and contribute to the Grammy Awards process.”
With a career spanning more than two decades, Danny Young has played an important role in shaping Nigeria’s contemporary music scene through hits including Oju Ti Won, Omo Lepa, Jangolova, and Para. His appointment reflects not only his longevity but also the continued global recognition of the creatives who helped lay the foundation for Afrobeats long before its international explosion.

Danny Young isn’t the only Nigerian making the list. Fellow music veterans Darey Art Alade and Sasha P have also been invited into the Recording Academy’s 2026 membership class, further strengthening West Africa’s representation within one of music’s most influential institutions.
For Darey, the invitation represents an opportunity to amplify African creativity on a global stage.
“From making music in the studio to building platforms that celebrate African creativity, I’ve always believed music has the power to move people, shape culture and connect the world.”
Sasha P, one of the pioneers of Nigerian hip-hop and CEO of Purple Entertainment, also welcomed the appointment, describing it as an opportunity to contribute to a global community committed to supporting creators and advancing the music industry.

Membership in the Recording Academy is by invitation and reserved for professionals who meet the organization’s eligibility requirements. Beyond voting for the Grammy Awards, members contribute to advocacy, education and initiatives designed to strengthen the global recording industry.
