#ThrowbackThursday- Childhood Games in Nigeria

The advent of video games and other time consuming activities has taken the place of many popular childhood games in Nigeria.
Some of these games were region specific while others were common to a remote community, For today’s throwback, we will be highlighting 5 games that are known to most Nigerians.

1. Skipping: This is something every child is normally interested in. This childhood master-thriller brought out the creative instincts of many Nigerian children, as some kids turned almost any flexible thing into a rope to successfully play this game. The theme song of this thrilling game can never leave the mind of any child of the 90’s.

2. Catcher (Police & Thief):  It is easier to see a unicorn on the streets than to see a Nigerian boy that never played this game. It never got stale. It never stopped bringing joy to our hearts, despite the numerous times we got injured while playing it, we always looked forward to our full recovery, so as to play this game with our friends.

3. Suwe: It is a unisex game and with just a series of well charted lines and a good spot in the sand, the stage was set to rock this game till your mama calls.

4. 4. I Call On…: This is one of the most creative games in the history of Nigeria. It sparked the creative, calculative and cognitive skills of all participants.

5. 5: Ten-Ten: This game brought out the acrobatic skills of of every Nigerian child. It was a mystery to guys and a joy to girls.
