Lil Nas X, the Grammy-winning singer/rapper, has released his latest single, “J Christ,” accompanied by a visually stunning music video that delves into biblical and celestial themes. Known for his bold and provocative visuals, Lil Nas X takes center stage as a savior-like figure, navigating challenges, and playfully toying with Christian imagery.
The cinematic music video opens with a lineup of celebrity lookalikes, including Mariah Carey, Barack Obama, Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Oprah Winfrey, approaching the gates of Heaven. Lil Nas X’s playful trolling continues throughout the video, featuring scenes of him at a B.C.E. Met Gala, engaging in cheerleading choreography, and saving souls in a modern world on the brink of Judgement Day.
The resurrection-themed video aligns with the lyrics of “J Christ,” where Lil Nas X references his comeback to music and the viral nature of his art. The chorus includes lines such as, “Is he ’bout to give ’em somethin’ viral? Is he ’bout to hit ’em with the high note?”
Addressing potential controversy, Lil Nas X clarified on social media that he is not intending to offend any religious groups. He emphasized the historical use of Jesus’s image in various forms of art and urged against gatekeeping a religion.
The video concludes with a declaration of “Day Zero A New Beginning” and a biblical verse: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation, The old man has passed away; Behold, the new has come.”
“J Christ” marks Lil Nas X’s first release in over a year, following his 2022 singles “Star Walkin” and “Late to da Party” with YoungBoy Never Broke Again.
