Bolanle Austen Peters’ “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” biopic is set to captivate audiences nationwide as it hits cinemas on May 17, 2024. The film, which had a successful limited screening in 2023, offers a compelling portrayal of the iconic feminist hero.

Initially screened for a week at the Silverbird Cinema in Victoria Island, Lagos, the movie garnered praise from the Anikulapo-Kuti family, paving the way for its broader release this year. The film chronicles the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, highlighting her pioneering journey from being the first female pupil at Abeokuta Grammar School to her activism alongside her husband, Israel Ransome-Kuti.

Funmilayo and Israel’s advocacy for justice led to the formation of the Abeokuta Women’s Union and sparked a fierce confrontation with traditional and colonial authorities. The movie features stellar performances by Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, Adunni Ade, and others, capturing the essence of Funmilayo’s resilience and impact.
