La Mode: What is your full name?
Osamu: My name is Osamu Ogbonmwan and i’m a makeup artist.
La Mode: Tell us about your makeup background?
Osamu: I have a background in Business Administration and have been in the makeup industry since 2006
La Mode: Tell us about your brand name and how it all started?
Osamu: I own a beauty business called ‘Osamu’s Beauty Matters’
My brand name is Beauty Matters. My personal philosophy is that everyone was created beautiful and what I do is to help ladies see and appreciate how perfectly they were created. As a result, I also have a beauty publication called TELLAWOMAN which is geared towards moulding wholesome women (who are beautiful in and out).
La Mode: How did your career in makeup begin?
Osamu: I never thought makeup would be something i’d take so seriously as I initially took makeup classes in 2006 to while away time when I had a long break between my graduation and when I went for my NYSC. As time progressed after my service year, I began to fall more in love with the art and see it as more than just a hobby. I started practising as a makeup artist in 2007 and opened my studio in 2008.
La Mode: As a makeup artist, which celebrity have you worked with?
Osamu: My work has been featured in several style magazines and publications, fashion shows, live concerts, music videos and I have done bridal makeovers for over 500 brides and lots of other ladies. Over the years, I also diversified into bead making and I own my own jewelry line called ‘Ivie Bespoke Jewelry’
La Mode: Which area of makeup are you known for?
Osamu: Bridal makeup artistry really interests me more than any other part of makeup, I really love being part of any bride’s big day.
La Mode: How far has your job gone?

La Mode: What is your most challenging experience as a makeup artist?
Osamu: As with most service rendering jobs in Nigeria, clients tend not to take my job seriously and that can be a little challenging but over time i’ve learnt to deal with this by doing my best to master and perfect my skills, this in turn brings a corresponding effect of respect and value for my services.
La Mode: Who is your role model and why?
Osamu: I think the single and most influential person that has shaped my development in the business is Mrs Banke Meshida-Lawal, I greatly admire her passion for the job and I kind of model myself after her.
La Mode: What are some of your favorite products in your makeup kit?
Osamu: I work with a variety of products but usually find myself reaching for my Mac products more often than others. I like the fact that they have such a wide variety of products and finishes and keep coming up with something new from time to time, you can barely keep up! I recently have also been trying my hands on Makeup Forever, Urban Decay, Kat Von D, Inglot, Motives cosmetics and lot of other really nice but maybe not so popular brands.
La Mode: What message do you have for young ladies and guys who want to build a career in makeup?
Osamu: I think upcoming makeup artists should be more interested in enjoying and mastering the art of makeup, get proper training and excel at the art. It shouldn’t first and always be about the financial rewards.
