Disney’s highly anticipated Lagos-based sci-fi series, Iwájú, is set to premiere on the Disney channel on DSTV starting in April, according to Christine Service, the general manager for The Walt Disney Company Africa.

The series, produced in collaboration with Nigerian-led Kugali Media, marks the first time Walt Disney Animation Studios has partnered with an external entity. It will be available for streaming on Disney Plus globally from February 28, but will also be airing on the Disney channel in Africa, including Nigeria, from April and May.

“Iwájú will be on Disney Plus across the globe from the 28th of February, which is fantastic,” said Service. “But we are also super excited that here on this continent and absolutely in Nigeria we will also be distributing Iwájú on the Disney channel starting in April and May.”

The six-part series will run from April 22 to 26, with a special marathon on April 27, a repeat broadcast from April 29 to May 4, another marathon on May 5, and finally, on Africa Day, May 25.

Service explained that the timing of the project was about discovering the right stories to tell in partnership with Kugali Media. She praised Kugali’s commitment to great storytelling, quality, and innovation, which aligns with Disney’s philosophy.

While Service did not confirm Disney’s next African project, she expressed excitement about working with more Africans in the future, highlighting the excellence in storytelling and filmmaking on the continent.

“Iwájú” promises to be a groundbreaking series that showcases African creativity and storytelling on a global platform.
