Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee athlete imprisoned since late 2014 for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, might soon be considered for parole.

Initially convicted of culpable homicide, his sentence was upgraded to murder, leading to a 13-year and five-month prison term. Wrongly denied parole in March, a new hearing this week will evaluate Pistorius’s conduct, mental health, and the risk of reoffending. If granted parole, concerns over potential revenge attacks may necessitate close protection for the former Paralympian.

The case drew international attention, with Pistorius maintaining he mistakenly shot Steenkamp, thinking she was an intruder.
